Between Worlds

2026

Each photograph represents a distinct „world,“ pulling characters out of their context and placing them into a new reality by merging stage photography with a personal artistic vision.

„Between Worlds“ is a conceptual photography series that explores the thin line between stage performance and visual art. Born from a close collaboration with professional theater, this project goes beyond simple documentation. It is an authorial interpretation of the director’s vision, the craftsmanship of costume designers, and the emotional weight of the script.

„Where fine art photography blends storytelling with a unique creative vision“

A glimpse behind the lens: how bold colors, symbols, and handcrafted sets came together to create „Between Worlds“.

Each Image, a Different World The title Between Worlds refers to the fact that each photograph represents a unique microcosm. On these foundations—the story and the scenography—Zuzana began to build her own vision. Through specific composition, shadow play, and post-production, she pulled the characters out of their theatrical context and placed them into a „liminal space.“

The story behind the series

What if theatre could exist not only on stage, but also as a single image carrying its emotional memory?

In her series Between Worlds, Zuzana Fajmonová approaches theatre as a living visual organism rather than a performance to be documented. Her images do not attempt to reproduce what happens on stage. Instead, they reconstruct the psychological atmosphere, symbolism, and inner tensions of each production through carefully staged photographic compositions.

Her work is based on an immersive research process. She enters the world of each production through conversations with directors and dramaturgs, study of scenography and costume design, and by observing rehearsals and final runs. Literature, films, and visual references connected to the performances become part of her preparation. This slow process allows her to understand not only the visual identity of the production, but also its emotional architecture.

From this research emerges a physical process of image construction. Fajmonová works through drawing and sketching, searching for symbolic connections between objects, materials, and gestures. Scenes are built manually — backgrounds painted, props constructed, textures selected, and bodies transformed through makeup and body painting. Photography becomes the moment where all these layers meet and crystallize into a single visual statement.

Her approach reflects a contemporary interdisciplinary practice in which the boundaries between photographer, scenographer, and visual artist dissolve. The resulting images exist as independent works that extend theatre beyond time and performance, transforming it into a lasting visual form.

Between Worlds ultimately speaks about transformation — about the fragile space between performance and stillness, between narrative and symbol, between reality and constructed image.

In her ongoing series Between Worlds, Zuzana Fajmonová explores the space where theatre, photography, and visual art intersect. Rather than documenting performances, she develops conceptual key visuals that reinterpret the emotional and symbolic core of each production through carefully constructed photographic images.

Her work is based on a research-driven methodology. Each project begins with extensive preparation including dramaturgical discussions, meetings with directors, study of scenography and costume design, and observation of rehearsals. She immerses herself in the intellectual and visual context of the production — reading the original texts, researching references, and analysing the aesthetic language shaping the performance.

The visual concepts emerge through drawing, sketching, and building symbolic connections between materials, colors, and objects. Her process resembles that of a scenographer or art director: scenes are constructed physically, backgrounds are painted by hand, props are often self-made, and materials are selected for their narrative potential. Photography becomes the final synthesis of this process rather than its starting point.

A significant aspect of her practice is collaboration. By working closely with actors, costume designers, makeup artists, and theatre teams, she creates a shared visual dialogue where the resulting image becomes a collective interpretation rather than a simple commission. This collaborative process allows her to translate performative energy into a still image that retains psychological depth and visual tension.

Her practice reflects a contemporary interdisciplinary approach where the role of the photographer expands into that of a visual artist and creative director. Through this method, Fajmonová positions photography as a medium capable of carrying complex narratives and existing beyond documentation — as an independent artistic statement.

Every artwork from the Between Worlds series is available only as a strictly limited edition print, produced on museum-quality archival paper, signed by Zuzana Fajmonova, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Bold colors, dramatic contrasts, and symbolic objects bring to life a world where the boundaries of the stage disappear. This series is a deliberate artistic dialogue: it begins with the professional foundations of a theatrical production—the director’s intent and the intricate work of costume designers—and is brought to completion through Zuzana’s independent vision.

Each image was meticulously planned through sketches and moodboards, ensuring that the final photograph is not a mere document of a play, but a handcrafted piece of fine art. By isolating characters and scenes from their theatrical context, the series explores the „liminal space“ between fiction and reality. Owning a piece of Between Worlds means holding a fragment of this reimagined space—a timeless icon born from the ephemeral magic of the theatre.
